is it cheaper to make a viv than to buy one? I have found a viv in my reptile shop including all stuff you need for about £150. I wondered if it might cost more to buy all the wood, glass, mesh, heaters etc. Was getting a friend to build one (he's a carpenter) but think it might cost alot more although it would be unique. As you have just made one for Lucky I thought you might know. How is Lucky now? Well excited still. Kids are already trying to think of names. July seems ages away but by the time I've sorted this viv out it'll be here! Told Homer he would be getting a friend but he didn't seem too bothered!!!! ;D

Andrea as that viv was in pic it cost £31 the light fitting is under £2 then you need bulb and guard. It is 3` x 18" x20".

i believe it is cheaper to make them but i usually buy them ready-made as it takes a while to put em together!

Dave iof you work out your sizes just get the wood all cut to size (B +Q) then it doesn`t take long to put together.

Lovely thanks everyone. Where do you all get the stuff from to build them? What about the toughened glass and lock for the doors and what do you seal everything with? Can you tell I havent got a clue? Friend is going to build it but I need to tell him what I need doing to it. What heating do you all recommend for a bigger viv? I've read so many different things about what you have to have and it sounds really complicated. What about all the wires from heat, lights etc?

melomine covered wood from b&q, the runners for the glass can also be bought their.
A glass cutter should be able to fit you out with some 4 or 6 mm thick toughened glass, also at b&q you should be able to get eather mesh, or a plastic strip which you can drill through for the ventalation, and that should also allow you to drill holes for the heatmat and light cable's.
Aquarium selant is the last thing to be used to seal the cracks/gaps before the heatmat and light is fitted, then left for 3-4 days to ventalate and then your ready to go.

Thanks all. Buying the stuff for the viv this week. Going to give it a go. How big do the ventilation holes have to be for a 3ft viv? I know you need a couple at different heights for the air to go in one side and out the other so the air circulates but how big? Also know I'm being a pain but I really am a begginner! How do you attatch a lock on the sliding doors?

Thatd be loverly! Thanks. How much do you want for it and how do you attatch it? Is it easy? DOes ventilation strip have the same size holes or does it vary? Homers a bit like a pencil and concerned that he might get through somehow? At the moment he has a mesh grill thing at top of tank in the lid which he cant reach yet. I'll send you a meessage with my address thanks again.

The lock fastens with a small thumb screw onto the glass, then a slider is placed over the metal edge and has a key to lock it.
Don't worry, i have enough for 4-5 planed viv's, and a few spare (got 20 off ebay for £25), so considering their about £4-5 each i got a bargain, just glad i could help out, and any spare or other thing's i don't need people can have if they whave use for them, better then them catching dust in a draw somewhere in my room, lol
