Meet sid, the western hognose. He's 2 years old and near enough fully grown, he likes hissing and spitting, and dislikes his current viv (he's getting a bigger 1 next week).

He is!!! Slightley anyway, he comes under "non venomous", but hold enough, he has rear fangs and this is what happens IF he was to bit me www.herpnet.net/bite/ Please veiw all the pic's and note it took over 72 hours for the swelling to go down. The fangs are actually used to poison frogs and to delate them.

Very cool and a little scary. When I was first looking at snakes the guy in the reptile store showed me an Asian Vine Snake. It looked cool, but it's also rear fanged. I didn't think it would be a great "starter snake" and it likes to eat lizards, which makes it a little harder and probably expensive to feed.
When I first glanced at the picture I thought it was some type of rattler though. There are areas here around Denver where rattlesnakes like to sun themselves in the morning. If you go for an early hike you can see them. I'd love to do that one day and take a bunch of pictures. If it happens I'll certainly post them here.

Baz, yeah he looks like a minature rattler, and acts like a cobra (hissing, spitting, flattening of his head and playing dead).
Lee i'm not sure yet, both my local shops wont stock them, i got him as an rescue snake, so i'll have to see.
Sparkle, he has struck at me a few times but only ever with a closed mouth (notice his nose? it's very sharp). Hopefully (touch wood) i won't get bitten.

theres not really an alternative to mice for them, i believe that most snakes will feed better in natural ways (such as in the dark with loads of movement from the mouse!) also remember that most poisones snakes also see heat so it may be a case of warming it right up an then dancing it infront of him! (works for most heat sensitive snakes!) p.s although im not to sure wether they do see heat, i will ask chris soon as he gets back from state side off his course

Nice snake I am interested to know about hognose 'venom' from a source that knows for sure... I was reading about them, as I thought I remembered reading something about their saliva containing enzymes. So far it seems quite certain they are classed as 'non-venemous' and I read they have no actual venom glands, but then I keep seeing 'duvernoys gland'. So it has confused me. EDIT - Not so much about hognose snakes, but its interesting to read. www.venomdoc.com/colubrid.html Interesting discussion... reptileforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7044I thought the only snakes with heat pits were boids and vipers...

true hognoses don't have pits.John i wouldn't wory to much about getting bit because you would have to let it chew on you for like 5 minutes beause they are backfanged besides that mans hand was that bad because loads of venom was injected because he did it on purpose to see the results so a litle bit of venom would probobly only make your hand red and numb for a bit.

these snakes can cause problems from a small bite, i have knoledge where these snakes are concerned as ive worked with mates with them! ok so your not going to die from a hognose bite but it needs to clamp on your hand for a matter of seconds to do damage! any bite that gives you will make your hand swell up (its a risk you take with owning them)
