Not long ago I had accepted the task in caring for an adorable yearling corn snake. The name is pinky and as of now I have no idea what the sex of the snake is. I am concerned though. It seems like no matter what I do the poor thing just isn't adjusting. Pinky always has trouble staying warm as well. I have a basking light but for some reason Pinky stays on the colder side of the tank. I have a temperature gauge to help me in making it nice and cozy but at the same time it's tiring me to wake up every hour on the hour to check on him. At times Pinky gets so cold that I have to pick the poor dear up and warm it myself. I have heard of different methods on how to warm the tank but I fear those methods.
The heating pads I hear can malfunction and burn my snake. I don't desire that to happen at all. The heating rocks as well are unreliable. I don't desire my snake to be burned nor injured so before acting I desire to know more.
Pinky is a rescued albino corn snake. The red eyes and white underbelly along with lack of pigment is there. I worry that maybe it doesn't bask in the light because of it's sensitive red eyes. In the day time he or she hides in the substrate on the cool side of the tank. Obviously I worry about the poor dear getting sick from being so cold.
The temperature is my main concern but there is also another interesting concern of mine.
I have read that you are not supposed to handle your snake before or after a feeding. However if you must move your snake to a feeding box or whatever... Then how can you do that without picking it up?
From countless sources i have heard that my snake can get internal blockage if it eats the substrate in the bottom of the tank. So I have to move it to eat right? If only I could just put a big rock in the tank... Like a table I could possibly get it to eat on that right?
Being a new snake owner and this being my first reptile ever I am struggling. I feel like I am failing my baby... As a motherly type animal owner I devote my love to all my animals. Pinky is no different.
Mostly I worry about it's eating and temperature.
Because it is albino pinky has a hard time staying warm. As soon as it's seventy in the tank the poor dear is just too cold to move. THen if I turn it up to about eighty at night then I worry about it over heating. Please if anyone could help me figure this out it would be an amazingly big help.
