Dave i was browsing your site,(exellent by the way) and im currently saving up for a roayl python, and i noticed your care sheet and it says you keep your royal heated with a heat mat, and i was wondering if this worked out ok for you?. because alot of people heat up there royals viv byceramic heaters but its also the more expensive option. and im looking to spend the least amount of money but at the same time look out for whats best for the snake. and how long is your royal python fasted for?, and alsohow big was he when you got him and did you put him and a small 2 foot viv? and how long did you keep him in the 2 foot viv for?. i had keira in the smaller tank that was given to me with her for 6 months before upgrading to a four footer! Im lucky in the sense that she has never fasted but my ex's one fasted for 8 months! finally fed when i made the mouse look alive as i could lol
She was only a foot when i got her but now shes 2 foot and is a great size in her new viv, also a heat mat is great but it all depends on what you want i think the heat pad works great and i will have to adapt to an under tank heater for a red tail!lol no worrys on the questions btw, i love to help where i can, if you have any more questions put another post on!

Dave do you use a heat bulb for basking?
I always thought pythons (and most boa's) needed 1?

Is it a straight light fitting or an angled 1? For a streaght 1 i used a bird feeder (meshthing that holds nuts), propper steal mesh that is.

mine is just a usual light fitting in the top of the viv, i did have a mesh cage but it cut kieras underside and i deemed it unsafe

It depends how their cut and filed, some are ok but others, well you found out didn't you.
