It takes hardly any time after they break the skin. You are very lucky to catch him a lot of people miss it. He will look great afterwards. ;D

It is now, but i no longer have it, (policy to do with temp housing and rehoming schemes), but a young lad i know age 13 has it, and he lives 200 yards away so i see peppie quite a lot. He's still not eating tho, and frogs and toads are hard to find this time of year, lol.

I must be lucky, cos I see my snakes shedding most times they do, I guess that comes with the lack of will to sleep.
I love hatchling hognoses, so tiny!

ok. he has now been shedding for about 6 hours and i'm a bit concerned. it's only done about 3 inches. he's not really moving around that much. and when he does it doesn't really look like the skin is moving? ??

dont worry just leave him an he'l get threw it. most of mine are just left to it an ive never had a problem with them yet (except for lightening's first shed, he didnt shed fully an it ended up me having to put a 6 foot boa in the bath to get the shed off)

if its a newborn it still may be absorbing the yolksac from its egg and will feed after its first shed so its not a worrying time at the moment but saying that i have had the odd individual snake take pink mice straight from egg. as vicki said keep the cage area small a small tuppleware tub with kitchen towel a small water bowl and hide is more than sufficient for a snake of that size as it makes them feel more secure i don't spray my corns as they have a waterbowl and excessive humidity is not good for their health,my atb only gets sprayed twice a day and its a tropical snake that requires high humidity with regards to length of time,it varies between 3-5 straight feeds without refusal but from petshops it really takes trust in your petshop as many do not have visible feeding/shedding records but i really hope you get it to feed molly lee

Ok, you just need to leave him without disturbance. This is his first ever shed and he is just learning. By taking him out and bathing him you are stressing him and this may well result it you having difficulty feeding him. I know the soaking thing is the general rule for adults but he is new born and hasnt really be born long enough to have dried out so much that he cant shed.
Like lee said, put a water bowl in big enough for him to soak himself. I have had 25 hatchlings this year and not one of them has had problems shedding (besides my little hope who was ill). I cant say ive seen them shed as they are in a room where the only person that goes in is me and thats only once a day to check them.
Can you run through your set up for me please? Size, temp gradients, hides, substrate etc.

Thanks for all your help. Vicki, he is in plastic tank that the reptile shop sold me for baby snakes. It is about 15 inches long by 6 wide. It has a heat mat placed under one half and has a layer of newspaper then a thin layer of bark spread over. It has a cork hide placed across the centre of the tank so that half is on the warm side and half on the cool side. I do not have the thermometer in there, tho i do have one. the shopsaid i shouldn't need it in as the heat mat would be ok. He has a small water bowl on the cool side. He has now shed. Tho,he was helped along. I was advised to hold him and let him wriggle around. 4 hours after shedding, i offered him a pinky. He has taken no notice of it and i was wondering how long i should leave him with it.

The pinkie should be ok till around 8pm tonight, ifs/he hasn't eaten after that time then dump the pinkie (or flush it). don't worry as the yolk should still be being digested, so try again in 5 days with a pinkie.
Your setup sounds ok, but i would still use the thermomitor on the warm side, and i would also add 2 toilet roll middles for hides as an alternative, 1 each on the warm/cool side as well as the cork.

Have taken the pinky out. he was showing no interset at all. i did see him open his mouth really wide but at he time he was absolutely nowhere near the food! I think i will just leave him for 3 days and then try again. maybe he needs to settle down after the intervention with the shedding. He's not being handled, tho we do take the lid off and lift the bark to see him a few times. is that ok?
